In the late-Victorian era Lancashire’s working classes came to Blackpool in search of respite from the ravages of their urban-industrial lives.

Attracted by the sea and its bracing breezes, Blackpool’s leisure entrepreneurs built ‘Pleasure Palaces’ that offered variety, theatre performances and the opportunity to participate in health-giving aquatic activities.
