Open Up The Mic at Showtown
Showtown is delighted to announce the return of Open Up the Mic, its inspiring free youth comedy programme for young people living in Blackpool.
Taking place from 17-21 August, the programme will be led by comedians Ruth E Cockburn and Keith Carter, who together make up the acclaimed comedy duo Black Liver.
Over five fun-filled days, young people from across Blackpool will have the opportunity to build confidence, resilience and communication skills through the art of stand-up comedy. Working in a supportive and encouraging environment, participants will explore improvisation, storytelling, joke writing and performance techniques before taking to the stage to perform their own original material in a live showcase at the end of the week.
The programme builds on the success of previous Open Up the Mic projects, which helped young people develop confidence, make new friendships and discover their own unique voice through comedy. Each cohort celebrates their journey by taking to the stage at one of Blackpool’s iconic entertainment venues, where in the past participants have received standing ovations from family, friends and invited guests after performing their first stand-up routines.
The impact of the programme is reflected in the feedback from previous participants and their families:
"They've been so happy after the sessions and they're much more confident in themselves." - Family member
"It feels like you're a real comedian and you feel really professional. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I made friends and had so much fun." - Previous participant, aged 11.
This year's programme forms part of Showtown's wider celebration of comedy, alongside Happiness! The Ken Dodd Exhibition, which is currently on display until 3 January 2027. Together, the exhibition and Open Up the Mic celebrate Blackpool's rich comedy heritage while inspiring the next generation of performers and storytellers.
Kari Singleton, Learning & Engagement Manager at Showtown said:
“Now in its sixth year, Open Up the Mic has become a flagship programme for Showtown. It’s a place where Blackpool’s entertainment heritage is celebrated whilst creating new opportunities for young people to step into the spotlight. Over a short period, we see young people grow in confidence, make new friends and then step onto the stage, grab the mic and fill venues with laughter and pride.”
The programme concludes on Friday 21 August with a live showcase performance at the Grand Theatre Studio, where participants will present their own comedy routines to family, friends and invited guests, celebrating everything they have achieved throughout the week.
