Stars behind the Stones: Friends of Layton Cemetery

Stars behind the Stones this Halloween

Discover and celebrate some of Blackpool's best-loved performers this Halloween, as the friends of Layton Cemetery amuse you with some fascinating stories about the “Stars behind the Stones”.

Layton is Blackpool’s Victorian Cemetery, opening in 1873 when St John’s churchyard became overflowing with burials. Many familiar names rest within the iron railings including famous performers in the town’s past.

Katherina Scherfenberg, was an important member of one of the famous troupes of performers made up entirely of little people.

Augusta Carolina Rosaline Wingfield, also known as Alphonsine or La Belle Rose was an incredible spiral acrobat and serpentine dancer.

King Ohmy the death-defying acrobat and founder of ‘Ohmy’s Circus’ who now share the same billing as our modern, much missed entertainers, such as Joe Longthorne.

Join the Friends of Layton Cemetery on Sunday 31 October at 1pm as they amuse you with the stories of the “Stars behind the Stones”.

The meeting point is by the Friends of Layton Cemetery office building, just inside the cemetery gates.
